Across the school, our Maths curriculum is taught in a creative and structured way with number skills at the centre of each area of the core subject.

Starting with E.Y.F.S, the Development Matters Framework is delivered predominantly through play based learning within the wider classroom environment. Weekly objectives from the Framework are taught in key group sessions and these skills are then embedded through play activities. Children are specifically taught; number recognition, shapes and early number facts through direct teaching before being given the opportunity to apply their knowledge through structured play. A visit to our Nursery and reception classes would reveal happy children playing in water whilst learning the beginning stages of capacity or creating collage style images from common 2d shapes.

Key Stage One children are set approximately two learning challenges per week which follow the White Rose Maths scheme of work. The children are exposed to lots of fun and fast paced learning activities through interactive whiteboard games and online games from websites such as; Espresso and BBC Bitesize. Daily practical activities are designed to aid the whole class teaching before children are given time in small groups to apply their learning through differentiated worksheets and tasks. All year one and two classes have time built in each week to focus on securing number facts including; doubles/halves, counting in multiples of two and general facts relating to time and simple fractions.

Throughout Key Stage Two, the majority of lessons follow a similar structure which combine weekly units from the White Rose Maths Scheme of Work and National Curriculum objectives linked to our whole school Target Tracker system. The classes each cover a minimum of two set learning challenges per week, however, there is a strong emphasis again on number acquisition across all units. Children enjoy fast paced mental starters which predominantly focus on securing number facts such as; Times Tables Knockout, Tables Bingo, Countdown and reasoning games including Correct/Not correct. All learning tasks are varied to take account of learning styles and written work is differentiated to meet the needs of all of our learners.

Opportunities to learn through games and practical problems solving activities support the teaching and learning of formal written methods to ensure that knowledge and skills can again be applied within a number of contexts. Our Friday Fun Maths sessions offer the children fun and fast paced learning opportunities intended to build up quick mental speed and foster a love of learning!
In each class, our children are encouraged to extend their own learning through independent extension activities from our Maths Challenge stations each week. Maths comprehension cards, shape equipment and number problems all feature in our challenge areas, though some classes have their own particular focus.

Some children receive additional 1:1 support in the form of short weekly intervention sessions, as well as group sessions to re-cover material taught in class. Our interventions focus on securing basic facts through the use of; Motivational Maths, 5 Minute Boxes, Espresso, Snap Card Games and focussed role play activities.
