Here at Adswood primary school we follow the Manchester, Salford, Tameside, Stockport and Trafford agreed syllabus 2016-2021 to teach the RE curriculum.

The aim of teaching RE is to ensure that all children:
• Know and understand different religions, backgrounds, cultures and ways of life
• Express ideas and insights about different religions, faiths and beliefs as well as how this might influence people from different backgrounds
• Gain and deploy skills to engage with different religions so that they can develop skills to question and inquire further about different religions and beliefs responsibly as well as being able to understand how different communities live together equally and respectfully

The religions and cultures being taught across school are as follows:
4–5s – Reception
Children encounter Christianity and other faiths, as part of their growing sense of self, their own community and their place within it.
5–7s – Key Stage 1
Children learn about the religion and way of life of Christians, Muslims and Jewish people throughout the year.
7–11s – Key Stage 2
Children learn about the religion, culture and beliefs of Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Jewish people throughout the year.

As well as following the RE syllabus, our school participates in whole school practical approaches such as ‘prayers in assemblies’, ‘value of the month’, ‘one world week’, ‘Anti-bullying week’, ‘culture markets’, ‘termly Bible encounters assembly’, ‘Christmas nativity plays’ as well as arranging school trips to places of worship including churches, mosques, synagogues and temples.

We also welcome visitors to school assemblies from different faiths and backgrounds. These experiences enrich and enhance our children’s learning and understanding. Some of our school’s most exciting and memorable RE visits, visitors and enrichment (VVE) activities so far include, ‘African Zulu dance workshop’, ‘Chinese New Year dance workshop’, ‘Cheadle mosque Eid cake celebrations’ and our whole school visit to ‘Davenport Methodist Church’.

The VVE activities listed above welcome the opportunity to raise children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) awareness by developing all rounded individuals who are conscious of other’s requirements and needs as well as their own. It also encourages children to become respectful and tolerant towards others of different religion, faith, culture and backgrounds as well boosting their confidence to celebrate their own differences and similarities. Most importantly, our RE teaching and learning closely follows our school ethos and values as it encourages everyone to be welcoming by showing kindness, respect and acceptance to all regardless of their differences.

Our ‘Adswood Culture Market’ for parents, carers and children, is a huge successful event, appreciated by all. The ‘culture market’ allows members of the community to come together and celebrate their different faiths, backgrounds and cultures through the love of food, religion, dance, dressing up and artwork.
