Personal, Social and Health Education including RHSE (Relationships, Health, Sex education)
PSHE & RHSE at Adswood Primary School
At Adswood Primary School, our vision is for every child to 'Enjoy, Believe and Achieve' in an environment rooted in respect, kindness, honesty, compassion, empathy, and care. These core values are reflected in our 'Adswood Superpowers', which underpin everything we do.
Our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum plays a central role in helping pupils thrive as individuals, family members, and confident members of society.
Using the Kapow Primary scheme, we deliver a progressive, spiral curriculum that builds on prior learning while fully meeting the updated statutory guidance for Relationships, Sex, and Health Education.
What Your Child Will Learn
Learning builds step-by-step from Reception through to Year 6 across key developmental themes:
-
My Healthy Self: Physical health, mental wellbeing, emotional regulation, and making informed choices.
-
Connecting with Others & Relationships: Building healthy relationships, showing empathy, respecting diversity, and resolving conflict.
-
The Online World & Cyber Safety: Navigating digital spaces safely, understanding digital footprints, and managing online peer pressure.
-
Staying Safe & Health Protection: Drug awareness, basic hygiene, everyday safety, and emergency response skills (First Aid).
-
Citizenship, Economic Wellbeing & Sustainability: Rights and responsibilities, financial literacy, democracy, and caring for the environment.
-
Growing Up: Understanding physical and emotional changes as children mature (with optional Year 6 Sex Education units taught following parent consultation).
How We Bring PSHE to Life
-
Dedicated Learning & Flexibility: Taught through weekly lessons, circle times, and assemblies, allowing teachers to adapt learning to address current issues or specific class needs.
-
Restorative Approach: We use a restorative framework to help pupils manage their feelings, resolve differences, and regulate their behavior positively.
-
Theme Weeks & Assemblies: Whole-school events like Best of British Week, Anti-Bullying Week, Aspirations Week, and One World Week deepen children’s understanding of British values and global citizenship.
-
Pupil Leadership: Children actively model our values through school leadership roles such as Wellbeing Buddies, Playleaders, and Heads of School.
-
Inclusion & Representation: Lessons use diverse, age-appropriate scenarios to reflect modern society, ensuring every pupil feels represented and learns to celebrate differences.

We follow the KAPOW scheme of work recommended by the LA-please see KAPOW overview below.
The new guidance focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships.
Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up will give children and young people the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and help them take responsibility for their own well-being.
